NOTE: Data concerning introduction dates in the 1949 checklist on p. 259 may be in error. There weren't any introductions of this iris in Fairmount or Gage's catalogs in 1940. There wasn't a 1941 Fairmount catalog on-line to verify it's introduction there, but it was interesting that it wasn't listed in the 1942 catalog. Gage had this listed in his Sunnyside catalog in 1941.

From Sunnyside Gardens catalog, 1941: WINTER SHADOWS—(Peck-Bent, 1941), (Sensation x Crusader). A sparkling light grey-blue, slightly crinkled falls and standards with changing highlights like the winter shadows on the snow. Color nearly like the beautiful climbing vine “Plumbago”. A perfect self color, medium, large 5 X 5 of. great substance and perfect form, Well domed standards with extra heavy mid-rib. Falls semi-flaring and wide. Each bloom lasts three or four days, and does not melt in the sun or rain, Four or five branches well placed, and in perfect proportion to the foliage. Early to midseason. 36 to 40 inches. Awarded H.C., A.I.S., Boston, 1940. Net. $25.00. ORIGINAL CATALOG DESCRIPTION. |
From Western Iris Gardens catalog, 1948: WINTER SHADOWS (Peck-Bent, 1940). L. 38". Softly appealing in its blue-white tones this late season flower fills a definite niche in the garden.
