From Southern California Iris Garden catalog, 1929: WESTERN SKIES (Essig, 1929) (Miss Willmott x Sherbet). Finest pale blue, almost a self, of large size—flower 4-1/2 x 6 inches—splendid substance, good carriage, and silk-like texture. The falls are soft bluish violet and almost horizontal, the haft lined olive green. The standards are light wisteria blue and erect, without any tendency to flop. Those who have worked with the hybrids of Miss Willmott will understand the reasons for the outstanding finish of this new hybrid. The stems are slender, stiff and from 3 to 5 feet tall, raising the flowers majestically above the bright green and vigorous foliage. Western Skies first bloomed April 11, 1925, and it has always been a great favorite in the garden, where it is in flower from the middle of April to the middle of May. There are many pale blue irises, but this one is in a class by itself. $5.00. |
