From AIS Bulletin #161, April 1961. Introducing VAN CLIBURN-Sdlg. 58-5C: (Jane Phillips x (Spanish Peaks x Cloudless Sky) X Starlift. Large, bold and striking full (medium) blue on the light side rather than dark. Standards are domed; falls are semi- flared and wide. Stalks are well branched; flowers are moderately ruffled with heavy substance. Stock·scarce. M. 38"; HC '58. $20.00. Cliff Benson.
VAN CLIBURN (C. Benson '61). Continuing to hold its "Top Ten" position with an ultrawide form of billows and ruffles, VAN CLIBURN returns our attention to a metallic medium blue coloration. Each flower sports huge size and cardboard heavy substance. For four seasons I have further admired the health and vigor of the plant and the seasonal dedication to blooming. This cultivar maintains one serious drawback-the stems cannot always hold and support the huge flowers and moderate winds will often blow stalks down. Roger R. Nelson, “Your More Music Survey,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 197 (April 1970): 9.]
