References:

From Carl Salbach catalog, 1937: VALIANT (Sturtevant 1937). A very distinct new iris with standards of iridescent old gold (Ridgway) with strong orange beard and haft of old gold with balance of falls wistaria violet. Perfectly branched and proportioned, with well domed standards. This was from a cross Miss Sturtevant made while visiting Mr. Mitchell's gardens some years ago - and which has proved itself very fine in both Miss Sturtevant's garden and our own. Listed here with our exclusive introductions but actually not an exclusive, as half of the stock went to Miss Sturtevant who is offering it through Mrs. Elizabeth Nesmith's catalog. Early mid-season. 36-mch. $10.00.
From Fairmount Gardens catalog, 1938: VALIANT (Sturtevant 1937) A very richly colored flower of peacock iridescence. The domed standards are a blending of blue and old gold with midrib of blue. The slightly drooping falls are brilliant wistaria-violet with faint old gold edge and a touch of bronze just below the rich orange beard. The crisp firm flowers are borne on tall well branched stalks. 38 in. $5.00.

Valiant is an iris of unusual color value which should have more publicity. It is from a cross Miss Sturtevant made while visiting in a Pacific Coast garden and was thoroughly tested before introduction. The queer, warty bud opens to a large blossom with flaring falls of bright, electric blue, the serrated edges a picotee of the pale copper of the standards which have a faint blue shadow along the midrib, blending into the color which embroiders the falls. It is unique and very lovely. [Lila McCombs, “A Critical Evaluation of Older Irises”, The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 110 (July 1948): 60.]
