Awaiting original catalog description |
From Indian Spring Farms catalog, 1927: SAN GABRIEL (Dean 1921). An early-flowering Iris of large size on the style of Lady Foster. S. light lavender-violet, arched; F. widely flaring slightly darker in color, finely reticulated dark brown at the haft. Stems tall and well branched. 48 inches. $3.00 each. |
From Milliken Iris Garden catalog, 1949: SAN GABRIEL (Dean) We consider this one of the finest irises in cultivation for the milder climates. While not recommended for the East, where its exceptionally early growth often gets caught in a late freeze, for Southern California gardens this iris is ideal. The large flowers area lustrous lavender flushed with rosy mauve and have a decided and pleasing fragrance. San Gabriel comes into flower very early in the season, usually by the first of March, and continues blooming for many weeks. It is particularly vigorous and is the tallest iris we grow. We have actually measured stalks 6 feet high. The foliage is green and beautiful all year. 35c; 3 for 75c; 12 for $2.00. |
From Carl Salbach iris catalog, 1938: SAN GABRIEL. A very large pinkish lavender of high excellence adding to its other merits the virtue of being early and long blooming. Well branched and very graceful. Contains half mesopotamica, and although some varieties having as much mesopotamica blood are hardy, San Gabriel is tender and does not winter well except in mild climates. Fragrant. 60-inch. 25c; 3 for 50c; 12 for $1.50. |
