'Pike River' (David Nicoll, R. 2011) Seedling #D00 3rd germ-2. TB, 39 (99 cm), Early bloom. Standards deep red-purple (RHS 77A); style arms medium-light purple; falls dark purple (79A); beards medium brown; slight spicy fragrance. Parentage unknown
Description from hybridizer's catalog:
In the Paparoosa range of the West Coast of New Zealand, the Pike River flows through the steep ranges covered in dense evergreen forests protecting the Coal Fields from intruding Man. This lovely dark purple iris broods on the loss of the 29 miners in the Pike River Mine disaster of 2011.
