From Maple Valley Iris Garden catalog, 1937: PERSIA (Ayres 1929) M. 48 in. An outstanding iris of great individuality, in rich tones as dusky and rare as these of an oriental tapestry. Tall and imposing with a glistening silky texture. Persia cannot be too highly recommended. H. M., 1928. 50c |
PERSIA: (Ayres). An iris well worth while. Stalk tall well branched; flowers the right size and with excellent substance. The smoky standards harmonize excellently with the purple blue in the falls. [Belsley, Ray J., Varietal Comments. Bulletin of the American Iris Society 74 (July 1939), 18.] |
I'll never have a favorite among the tall bearded, but my favorite of the very old varieties is Persia. This is an exquisitely tailored blossom of good shape and substance, with standards the iridescent gray-blue of a pigeon's breast and broad, hanging falls of bright violet. [Lila McCombs, “A Critical Evaluation of Older Irises”, The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 110 (July 1948): 59.] |
PERSIA (Ayres), very well grown. The colour is too indefinite and the flower lacks substance.(Seen much better further north.) [G. L. Pilkington, "Iris Notes", A.I.S. Bulletin 74 (July 1939): 31.] |
At first I had PERSIA of this class in my list, but dropped it because one plant of it cannot be appreciated, although I still like it very much in a large clump against a background of green. [Wills, Jesse, (1943). Older Iris I would Buy Again, American Iris Society Bulletin, 89(April 1943), 14.] |
