From Maple Valley Gardens catalog, 1952: NORTHWESTERN. Franklin Cook 1951, (BLUE GLOW & GULF STREAM). Midseason, 38 inches. We are proud to present this magnificent new royal purple beauty so much admired here at the 1950 Annual Meeting. It is majestic, colorful, clear and bright, a pure self color throughout even to haft and beard. The flowers are large. beautifully arched. with well domed standards and wide, fairly straight hanging falls. It has just that touch of ruffling everyone admires. The strong stalks have moderate three way branching with 9 to 13 well placed buds giving a long season of bloom. NORTHWESTERN grows superbly, often making 5 to 9 side-shoots in a year, and is perfectly hardy. H. C. (Highly Commended) in 1950. H. M. (Honorable Mention) in 1951. $15.00.
From Iris Test Garden Catalog, 1955: NORTHWESTERN. (F. Cook 1951). M. 38 inches. (Blue Glow x Gulf Stream). A pure self of royal purple with fine form and broad, slightly ruffled petals. This has attracted much attention wherever grown the past two seasons and is a topnotch iris. A.M. 1953. $10.00.

"Northwestern, a deep purple iris, made me gasp. It is tall without ,being rangy, dignified and beautifully proportioned. The color is even, beautiful and alive. The iris doesn't sprawl in any way but still isn't precise nor stilted. I feel so happy that Franklin Cook yielded to my importunings and let me buy one this year. By the way, it was one of the finest plants I ever bought anywhere." Mrs. Leo Reynolds (Memphis, Tenn.), “Notes from Region 7,” The Bulletin of the American Iris Society, No. 125 (April 1952): 58.
