From Tell’s Iris Gardens catalog, 1959: Introducing MIXED EMOTIONS (Neva Sexton, Wasco, Calif.) Midseason-Late. 36 inches. (Golden Ruffles x Azure Skies.) Looking as though it were carved out of blue-tinted alabaster, and of such heavy substance one would almost think it had been cast of this precious mineral, the flowers have a difficulty folding up when their several days of usefulness are spent. The actual color is pearled white (Blue-tinted white) with chartreuse smoothly brushed on at the hafts. The styles are chartreuse and the stigmatic lips are blue (quite an unusual feature, I found) and the chartreuse beard is tipped blue. The very round falls are deftly ruffled near the hafts which are so wide they almost touch one another and the falls flare horizontally yet have a lilt and charm that keep them from appearing too formal. Mrs. Sexton is to be complimented on this great first introduction and we give it our highest recommendation. We have guested it widely from Oregon, California to Ohio so it is hoped that fanciers all over the United States may have an opportunity to see this magnificent flower, for it was never seen outside its home garden until last year. No.N-0-6. $25.00. |
From AIS Bulletin #161, April 1961. MIXED EMOTIONS ML 36". (Golden Ruffles x Azure Skies) This excellent-substanced iris opens a bluish green fading to a pearly tint with a smooth brushing of chartreuse at hafts and beard, stigmatic lip blue. The very round falls flare horizontally and have a bit of ruffling at hafts. Comment from Iowa: "This was the most interesting iris in my garden, with blooms lasting two weeks." HM '59. $15.00.
