From Chevy Chase Iris Garden, Marion Shull catalog, 1926: JULIA MARLOWE — First Prize, A.H.S.,1923 — A stately flower with Chinese Violet standards and Raisin Purple falls, producing a glowing, far carrying, pink and red effect in the sun. Flowers 5-1/2 inches high and 3 inches wide, giving a general vertical effect. Fragrant. Over 40 inches. Rivals Morning Splendor for first place in the esteem of many visitors to the garden. $10.00.
From Adamgrove catalog, 1997: JULIA MARLOWE (Shull, 1924). Mr. Shull himself called it Chinese violet standards and raisin purple falls. Well, all right. The point is, he was mightily proud of its glowing color, which is basically a red-violet bitone. Shull wrote a popular book, Rainbow Fragments, published in 1931. Copies are still to be had, and not terribly pricey. $5.00.

From Indian Spring Farms catalog, 1927: JULIA MARLOWE (Shull 1924). S. Chinese-violet; F. raisin-purple. Very large flower with tall, arched standards and long, straight-hanging falls of Magnifica shape. The coloring produces a rich, glowing pink-and-red effect in the sun similar to Leverrier. The stalk is tall and well branched. Fragrant. 40 inches. $7.50 each.
