■ (TB) 'Jake'
1943, Sass
'Jake', (
Jacob Sass, R 1943) TB. Late bloom. Color Class-WW. (
'Tiffany' x
'Maid of Astolat'). Sass, J. D. Long 1943.
Note on introduction year: 'Jake' was certainly not introduced with a lot of fanfare in 1943 and 1944. None of the Sass Iris price lists for 1943 record 'Jake' as being introduced that year. The first record was seen in the 1944 Sass price list and having the introduction year as 1943. J.D. Long nurseryman in Boulder, CO first listed "Jake" in their
1944 catalog with a minimal description. It appears that Cooley's Iris Gardens did not have a catalog in 1944, maybe because of WW II. They listed Jake in 1945.
See below:
From Sass Iris Price List(Maple Road Gardens), 1944: JAKE (J. Sass, 1943)-A glistening white of heavy substance, 38-inch well branched stem. $1.50. |
From Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1945: "A white white, with no other color in it; a very large flower, well formed, free blooming and an easy grower. The introducer says that this is the white that everybody has been waiting for, at a price everyone can afford. $1.50 each." |
