'Extravagant' (Melba Hamblen, R. 1982). Seedling H78-104-1. TB, 36" (91 cm), Early to late bloom. Standards red purple (RHS 72C); falls slightly lighter, lightening toward center and darkening toward edge, laced and ruffled; cerise beard. 'Lilac Flame' X 'Glory Bound'. Mission Bell Gardens 1983. High Commendation 1982; Honorable Mention 1985; Award of Merit 1989.

From AIS Bulletin #248 January 1983 Introducing EXTRAVAGANT. 34", EL. Swirling ruffles and tantalizing lace embellish large, broad petaled flowers carried on strong, well branched stalks. Vigor and flower habits are excellent. Color? Elusive. Depending on time light, eye of the beholder. Robert F. Wilson (Royal Horticultural Colour Chart) might select Mineral Violet or deeper toned Amethyst Violet, or an apt term from the pages which encompass the gamut of pinkish violet through rosy purple. In our opinion, Extravagant reads RHS 72C with lighter fall centers and deeper petal edges. Beards are cerise. (Lilac Flame X Glory Bound). HC '82. #H78-104-1. Net $25.00. Mission Bell Gaardens.
