From Maple Valley Iris Garden catalog, 1937: COLUMBINE (Mur. 1930) M. 36 in. A pure dazzling white, medium in size and height, but excellent in form and perfectly proportioned. The very best low priced white iris. Try it with Luzianna. 25c.
COLUMBINE. Introduced as a white Aphrodite, one of the parents. As clean and clear as a crystal, with lovely form, slender branching stems, this free flowering white is distinct from all other white irises, and as a result it was awarded the silver medal at the English Iris Society's exhibit in London in 1930. Columbine is a very fast multiplier, our own stock increasing about fifteen to one in two years. Each $6.50, three for $15.00 _[Cooley's Wholesale pricelist, 1932]

Surely it must be a diploid. Even in this age of tetraploids, there remain some diploids worthy of any garden, and Columbine is one of these. I had not previously grown this variety, yet I became so intrigued with its profusion of beautiful clear medium sized white blooms that I added it to my collection as late as 1950. Galyon, F. (1952). “Dark horses” of irisdom. Bulletin of the American Iris Society, 126, 25.
