(Ayers 1934);
Schreiner 1934;

Iris City 1938; R., 1932; Yr. Bk., I.S.(E.) 66: 1932; Synonyms: Byzanthium / Oakhurst 1939); Byzanthum (Flow. Grow. 309. June 1936; Kellogg 1935)
From Schreiners Iris catalog, 1934: BYZANTIUM (Ayres '33). A tan brown overlaid with gold; along the midrib of the standards is a delicate bright line (pencilling) of iridescent blue giving an unusually lovely color combination. The blue is almost turquoise in certain lights and adds charm and refinement to the whole flower. Good grower, mid-season and 32" high. Many of the visitors in Dr. Ayres' garden mentioned that they liked this better than Jean Cayeux. It is especially noted for not fading in a hot sun. Stock very limited. $20.00.
