From Fleur De Lis Gardens catalog, 1963: BLUE TATOO (Tompkins 1963) E.L. 38 in. ((B. Shimmer x Tiffany) x DeF. P 42)) x (Dotted Swiss x Azurite). A favorite with garden visitors during and since the 1960 Convention, this is a huge, flaring plicata of white with markings of deep blackish purple. The broad thick petals have ruffled edges with well domed stands and near horizontal falls. The flower has the appearance of polished white marble with black purple markings evenly applied around the standards, very heavily along the sides of the haft with this darker touch becoming even around the other edges of the falls. These markings are of the heavy Polka dot type as if applied with the point of a large needle; a most attractive marking, punctuated by a deep purple black triangular blotch under the beard. A showy iris with lots of bloom on widely branched stalks, this is a good grower. No. 59-23B. $20.00. |
