Swertii (Collected -Figured in 1612). Emanuel Sweerts's
Forilegium 1612; short IB; W8, White feathered blue-toned (purple plicata); three flowered; not very fragrant; Late midseason bloom; Originally described in Lamarck's Encyclopedia 3: p. 296. 1789; also in Redouté's Les Liliacées p. 306-307;
1 to 1-1/2 ft. (30-45 cm) long; spathe-valves flushed with violet; outer segments. 2 to 2-1/2 in. (2.5-3.8 cm) long, obovate-cuneate, white, faintly veined and flushed with purple on the margin; inner segments as large, much crisped, pure white, except the purple keel and margin. "Fragrant. Known only in cult." - Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture. A form of Iris pallida probably ssp. Cengialti. One of the Dutch and Flemish painters' favorite iris in the 17/18C. A confusion has arisen between iris plicata and iris swertii since Farr's catalog gave them as synonymous. Iris swertii is probably extinct nowadays.
