■(SPX) 'Flying Dragon'
2006, Silvers
'Flying Dragon' (
Thomas Silvers, R. 2004) SPEC-X, 29" (74 cm), Midseason bloom. Standards and style arms medium purple (RHS 90D); Falls medium purple (90D), small almost white area beside beard/crest with subtle darker purple haft marks; beards yellow (160A) in throat merging to white crest on Falls; slight sweet fragrance. Parentage unknown, probably tectorum-bearded cross.
Hybridizers Comments: Unknown parentage, but obviously from the bearded X Iris tectorum crosses I'd been playing around with. Relatively slow to increase and attractive to borers, I registered this one because of the general scarcity of this kind of hybrid and because it has bigger, more overlapping-form flowers than the 1928 hybrid 'Paltec'. It also has another rare trait for these hybrids; it produces a small amount of pollen. No offspring so far.
