Louisiana Iris are very cold hardy and can be grown into Canada zone 4. They have a reputation in English garden books for not overwintering. The reason for this is simple. They require about a month of hot weather in summer to prepare them for overwintering. If they are living in a place where summer heat rarely occurs they may not accept the freezing temperatures of winter. Most places in the USA have an adequate summer to prepare the rhizome for their winter dormancy.
