Walther Cup

The Fred and Barbara Walther Cup is Awarded annually by The American Iris Society to the originator of the iris variety that received the greatest number of votes in the Honorable Mention (HM) award balloting, regardless of classification. All classifications of irises are eligible.

The Walther Cup was awarded during the years 1971 to 1978 to the Iris receiving the most votes in the Judges' Choice balloting. 'Ann Chowning' LA (Frank Chowning): 179 votes, was the last Iris to receive the Walther Cup from the Judges' Choice balloting. Award of the Walther Cup changed to the Iris receiving the highest number of votes in the Honorable Mention Award section of the offical ballot. Although not mentioned in the 1979 AIS Awards results, ‘Sugar Tree’ TB (William Bledsoe): 87 votes, received the most Honorable Mention votes and should have been noted as the first Walther Cup winner under the newly adopted recommendation.
