John Bartram;

Bartram started the first botanical garden in the USA. He traveled extensively through the early colonies collecting plants and propagating them at his nursery for sale. He is Considered the Father of American botanist. He sent the new world Iris plants to Linneaus Who provided them their first official names. He and Benjamin Franklin started the Philadelphia Philosophical Society and with Franklins backing he statred the first botanical garden in the USA.

Apparently no images of John Bartram exist except the line drawing to the right.

William Bartram

William continued his fathers nursery busines and issued possibly the first American plant catalog in 1887. The catalog listed Domestic Irises in one section and Exotic Irises in another. Click on the images to see the catalog in the Biodiversity Heritage Library.
