From Melrose Gardens catalog, 1968: DELTA KING (Ben R. Hager) LOUISIANA IRIS 30" ((Upstart x Fire Alarm) X Sibling)). Named for the river boat, built in Stockton and now tied up in Port Stockton. I would have named the iris Delta Queen after the sister ship to the Delta King and on which the AIS conventioneers had a "spree" including Hush Puppies at the last Memphis convention, but the name was taken. The Delta Queen was also built in Stockton, believe it or not, and operated on our local rivers during the 20's and 30's. This is a very large flower with petals so wide that they form a nearly solid flower. All petals arch outward and downward at the tip and are a full terracotta red with sharp yellow spears to half the length of the sepal. The terracotta red colors are my favorite colors in the Louisiana iris, especially since they appear nowhere else in the iris family. $15.00 |
