Awaiting original catalog description
* This is a wild collected natural hybrid found by Dr. Small of the New York Botanical Gardens while collecting in the swamps surrounding New Orleans in the late 1920’s. He named this iris a new species called iris vinicolor but it was later determined to be a natural cross of I. fulva’s red gene influence on I.giganticaerulea. Dr. Small was a close friend of E.A. McIlhenny, owner of the well known Avery Island Jungle Gardens along with the Tabasco sauce factory. He gifted many of his collected species giganticaerulea along with this vinicolor when he retired. While on a college field trip to the gardens in 1973 I collected a single rhizome which has vastly multiplied. I contacted the heirs of the garden in 2022 to get permission to register it. Upon inspection of the boathouse location, we realized that it was not there anymore. I delivered a large vat full to replace their collection in April 2022. GNOIS also received a vat for their preservation collection./Patrick Fett -- PatrickKFett - 13 May 2023
