From Marx Gardens catalog, 1958: VAIN VICTOR (Marx 1957) Each $10.00. Strutting, as it were, in the glory of its irresistibility, is this splendid, bold, magnificent flower - a triumph in clarity of form and color pattern. It is a large 8-inch double in which the reddish dark (Patriarch) purple border is displayed for fullest effect. The center of the petals is formed by a large area of white, with white veins extending deep into the violet rim. Creamy-pinkish semi-erect styles are adorned with a light narrow seam of the same violet. The reddish petals are deeply and heavily frilled, all the more vivid by contrast with the classic, nearly flat design of the flower. One-way branching. 42 inch tall. Midseason to late. Pictured on page 8.
