From Marx Gardens catalog, 1955: GREAT WHITE HERON (Marx 1953) Each $5.00. One of the very largest of all Japanese iris. A magnificent white iris that, with no coddling whatever, will produce 11 inch flowers year after year. The mammoth semi-double flowers unfold atop tall 5 foot stems, resembling large white birds poised for flight. Little or no branching is completely overcome by the gigantic proportions of the blooms. Splendid foliage of graceful arching habit adds to the garden value of this giant. Early to midseason.
