From Sass catalog, 1937: CHALLENGER (Jacob Sass, 1930)-A huge, very dark intermediate of Dominion race quality. S dull dark purple. F dark blackish violet, velvety, with a contrasting white beard tipped orange. Falls flaring. The largest flowered intermediate and a favorite wherever seen. Vigorous and free blooming. 25c |
From Hill’s Iris & Peony Farm, ca 1932: CHALLENGER (Jacob Sass 1930). S. dull dark purple, very large and overlapping. F. dark violet black widely flaring, white beard tipped orange. One of the very largest intermediates blooming a long time. Heavy two-inch leaves, stiff and curling. Very vigorous. 5.00 |
