From Tell’s Iris Garden catalog, 1955: RAINIER VALLEY (Fred R. Crandall). E.-M. (I. hoogiana x Shining Waters.) Introduced primarily for breeding purposes, this I hoogiana seedling is, indeed, very blue among the medium blues. The flowers are large, nicely shaped and the smoothly tailored flaring falls are set off by a rich orange beard typical of this type of hybrid. Fertile both as pod and pollen parent it will be especially useful as a pollen parent, and has already produced some lovely blue seedlings. It cannot miss with such things as are now available for breeding. The 36-inch wiry stems are sturdy and the foliage is rather good for such a hybrid and does not disappear entirely as with so many regelia-hybrids. Very easy to grow. $5.00.
From Fleur de Lis Gardens catalog 1956: RAINIER VALLEY (Crandall 1955) E. M. 36 in. (Hoogiana x Shining Waters). A new hybrid of almost true medium blue. The flowers are much like Hoogiana but have the size of tall bearded. The petals carry the hoogiana smoothness and are completely free of veins and the beard is very full and of a rich orange color. Should be a top breeder. 4.00.
